Terms of Service

Effective date: March 2, 2026

1. Acceptance of Terms

By installing, accessing, or using the NodeZero browser extension or visiting this website, you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, do not use NodeZero.

2. Service Description

NodeZero is a decentralized password manager delivered as a Chrome browser extension. It provides:

  • Local vault storage with field-level encryption
  • Hardware-backed authentication via WebAuthn / FIDO2
  • Decentralized identity (DID) for vault ownership
  • Optional cross-device sync via your Google Drive
  • Password generation and CSV import from other managers

3. Your Responsibilities

NodeZero is a zero-knowledge system. This means you — and only you — are responsible for:

Recovery Phrase

You must securely store your 12-word recovery phrase. It is displayed once during setup and cannot be recovered by NodeZero or any third party. Loss of your recovery phrase combined with loss of device access means permanent, irrecoverable loss of your vault.

Vault PIN

If you use PIN-based vault access, you are responsible for choosing a strong PIN and keeping it confidential. NodeZero does not store or transmit your PIN.

Security Key

If you use a hardware security key (e.g., YubiKey) for vault authentication, you are responsible for maintaining physical custody of that key.

4. No Warranty

NodeZero is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranty of any kind, express or implied. We do not warrant that the service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that defects will be corrected. You use NodeZero at your own risk.

5. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, NodeZero and its contributors shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including but not limited to loss of data, loss of access to credentials, or financial losses arising from the use or inability to use the service.

In no event shall the total liability exceed the amount you paid for the service (which is $0 for the free tier).

6. Data & Privacy

Your use of NodeZero is also governed by our Privacy Policy. NodeZero employs a zero-knowledge architecture — we cannot access, read, or recover your vault contents. All encryption and decryption occurs locally on your device.

7. Service Availability

The NodeZero extension operates primarily locally. The optional cloud sync service may experience downtime or disruptions. We do not guarantee uptime for the sync service. Your vault remains locally accessible regardless of sync service availability.

8. Open Source License

NodeZero is released under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 (AGPL-3.0). You may view, fork, modify, and distribute the source code in accordance with that license. The license requires that any modified versions also be made available under the same terms.

9. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

  • Use NodeZero for any illegal purpose or to store credentials for unauthorized access
  • Attempt to abuse, overload, or disrupt the sync service
  • Reverse engineer, tamper with, or bypass the extension's security mechanisms
  • Upload malicious or excessively large data through the sync service

10. Third-Party Services

NodeZero relies on third-party cloud infrastructure for vault sync and website hosting. Your use of these underlying services is subject to their respective terms of service. NodeZero is not responsible for third-party provider availability, performance, or policies.

11. Modifications

We reserve the right to modify these Terms at any time. Updated terms will be posted on this page with a revised effective date. Continued use of NodeZero after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.

12. Governing Law

These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with applicable law, without regard to conflict of law principles.
